Youri was born on 13 March 1955 to Peroun Taing and Yen Deng the second oldest of 6 children in Battambang, Cambodia. Youri and her family survived the Cambodian killing fields during the 1975 to 1979 time period. Youri was always proud of playing a key part in leading her family thru the killing fields in finding food and adapting to the extremely dangerous conditions. Youri was well-educated but needed to hide this educational level from the Cambodian Communists or she would be assassinated.
