Pedro Nestor Artiga

October 12, 1941 — January 28, 2021

Pedro Artiga was born in Retalhuleu Guatemala on October 12, 1941 to Isabel Garcia and Pedro Nestor Artiga Sr. However Pedro was raised solely by his mother. Pedro was born with asthma and at times the attacks were very severe, but it did not impede him doing what he loved the most which was playing basketball. He played collegiate and professional basketball teams in Guatemala. After traveling to the United States for the first time in the late 1960’s, he decided to stay in San Jose, California. There he met the mother of his three children, Peter, Jack and Leslie. In the mid 70’s, the whole family moved back to Guatemala where Pedro worked for a Canadian oil company and taught English at a college in Guatemala City. In the mid 80’s he decided to return back to the United States and call Los Angeles, California his home. He worked management in the logistics industry which he later retired from. Over time the birth of each grandchild brought him joy and his devotion to them brought him happiness in his later years. Pedro was an avid reader, a sports fanatic, and a movie buff. He loved attending all of his grandkids events, from recitals, games, to graduations. The greatest title Pedro ever held was of “Grandpa” / “Papa”. He is survived by his sister Elena Reyes, his son Pedro Jr., and daughter in law Toni Artiga, son Jack, and daughter in law Georgina Artiga, daughter Leslie and son in law Martin Rubalcava, and 8 grandchildren: Miriam DeHaven, Martin Rubalcava, Melina Rubalcava, Luca Artiga, Damian Artiga, Dorian Artiga, Maribel Rubalcava and Lexa Artiga. He is survived also by his long-time partner, Luz Rodriguez. Pedro passed away due to Covid-19 complications. He was fortunate to be surrounded by his 3 children at his bedside. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his family in California and family and friends in Guatemala.
The family urges everyone to wear a mask, and stay safe.

Funeral mass will be held on February 20, 2021 11am at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Hermosa Beach. Due to Covid protocols, only immediate family may attend.
