Hee Chang Ku, fondly known as James Ku, passed away on October 2, 2024, at the age of 62, after a courageous battle with terminal liver cancer. Born on December 14, 1961, in South Korea, James' life was a testament to resilience, service, and love. At 18, he immigrated with his family to the United States, settling briefly in Missouri before moving to Southern California, where they found their true home in Glendale, now cherished by family in Torrance, California.
In 1980, James enlisted in the United States Army as an Infantryman, beginning a distinguished military journey. His first assignment led him to Bravo Troop, 2nd Squadron, 1st Cavalry Division, 2nd Armored Division, where he returned to South Korea on deployment for 12 months. During his time there, he courageously served along the DMZ, earning the prestigious insignia as an Im Jin Scout, a title of great honor and respect. While in service, he met and married his beloved wife, Jae Hee, with whom he chose to build a beautiful family after his honorable discharge in 1985.
James Ku's life in Southern California was marked by humility, integrity, and, above all, tenacity. Throughout his life, he embodied perseverance, whether facing challenges in business, striving to establish stores, or enduring setbacks in life's many pursuits. James never allowed failures to deter him. Instead, he exemplified the power of getting back up stronger, pressing forward with hope, and an unwavering drive to reach his next goal. These values of resilience and perseverance remain a cherished legacy and serve as guiding principles for his family.
James also had a passion for cooking, particularly for grilling outdoors. Whether it was steaks, hot dogs, or any meal that brought people together, he loved using the grill in the backyard, creating meals that became family favorites. His joy in cooking for loved ones remains a cherished memory, symbolizing his warmth, generosity, and love for family gatherings.
James Ku's legacy continues through his wife, Jae Hee Ku; daughter, Joanne Ku; and son, Kevin Ku. Known as a man of principle and unwavering honesty, James remained steadfast even through life's most challenging moments. Earlier this year, in March, he was diagnosed with terminal liver cancer, facing his final months with courage and grace.
A man of varied interests, James enjoyed golf, fitness, and playing Texas Hold 'em with friends, family, and coworkers. He found joy in simple yet cherished moments with loved ones. Throughout his life, he embodied the values of selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage-principles he upheld with pride until the very end.
James Ku will be remembered as a warrior, husband, and father who lived in faith and devotion. His memory will be cherished in the hearts, minds, and spirits of all who knew him. We honor him now and always, resting in the peace he so rightly deserves alongside the Lord he held close.
May he rest in eternal peace, forever cherished and remembered.
