Emanuel Valdez—known as Papa to his grandchildren, Meme to his Texas family, and Manny to his friends—passed away peacefully at home in Gardena, California, on October 24, 2025, at the age of 85.
Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, on December 20, 1939, Manny was the middle child of three and a proud graduate of Roy Miller High School. He later moved to California, earned his bachelor’s degree from Cal State Dominguez Hills, and built a 30-year career with TRW before retiring in 1999.
In retirement, Manny devoted his life to faith and service. He introduced Cursillo to First Lutheran Church and helped establish the Spanish Cursillo program, serving as one of its first leaders. He also participated in Kairos Prison Ministry, working with inmates at Terminal Island and California City prisons, and gave countless hours serving meals to the homeless and helping those in need. Manny volunteered for many years with the Southern California West Synod of the Lutheran Church, supporting pastoral candidates and serving on various committees.
Manny is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, and their daughter Jennifer. He is also survived by his sons Emanuel Jr., Thomas, and Kenneth from his previous marriage, six beloved grandchildren: Adara, Jonathan, Jessenia, Drake, Julian, and Jenna, and three great-grandchildren: Esteban, Camilo and Maximus.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, November 22, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Torrance, California.
Manny will be remembered for his steadfast faith, generous heart, and deep devotion to family and community.
