Edward George Gerlits, known to his loved ones as Ed, passed away peaceably on January 22, 2024, at the age of 91 at home in Lomita, California, surrounded by his loved ones.

Ed was born on April 23, 1932, in Mount Angel, Oregon. He was the youngest of nine siblings and was raised on the family farm in Silverton, Oregon. From an early age, Ed displayed a remarkable talent for fixing almost anything, a skill that would serve him well throughout his life.

After serving in the US Marine Corps from June 1951 to July 1953, where he became an aircraft engine mechanic, Ed pursued a career as a flight engineer for Western Airlines. However, he found his true calling when he joined the Los Angeles City Fire Department in 1962. Ed excelled in his role as a firefighter and advanced through the ranks to become an engineer during his 30-year tenure. Even after retiring, Ed continued his dedication to serving others as a volunteer firefighter with the Coffee Creek Fire Department, where he eventually became Captain.

Ed had a deep love for the outdoors and instilled a sense of wonder and adventure in his children. He took his family on camping trips across the Western United States, creating lasting memories. In retirement, Ed settled in Coffee Creek, California, where he enjoyed 26 fulfilling years. He cultivated a beautiful garden and honed his woodworking skills in his woodshop. Ed's craftsmanship was admired by many, and he sold his wood creations at various craft fairs. He was also an active member of the Trinity Lake Lion's Club and was awarded Lion of the Year and volunteered at St. Patrick's Church, leaving behind a legacy of woodwork. He & his wife also participated in the Adopt-A-Highway program.

Ed was a man of few words but possessed many talents. His strong work ethic and selfless nature served as an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be dearly missed by his surviving children: Colleen Martinez (SIL-Rolando Martinez), Mary Rosas, Edward C. Gerlits (DIL-Thuy Gerlits), and Ann Marie Gerlits. Ed was a loving grandfather to Connie, Nikki, Heather, Ryan, Michael, Kyle, Gwyn, Matthew, Nicholas, Chelsea, Kelsey, Kayla, Anthony, and a great-grandfather to Natalie, Mackenzie, Aurora, Scarlet, Hunter, Kyle, Ella, James, Kailand, River, and Aiana.

Ed was preceded in death by his wife, Kathy Gerlits, and his son, Tim Gerlits. He is survived by his cherished family members who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.
