Obituary

Carol Carruth Chase of Torrance, California, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2025, just 11 days short of her 90th birthday, at home in Torrance, California.

Carol was born on January 5, 1936, in Ogden, Utah, the oldest of six daughters born to Blaine William Carruth and Marcella May Ford. She attended Lorin Farr Elementary School, Central Junior High School, and Ogden High School. In 1953, she moved with her family to Salt Lake City, where she attended South High School for her senior year and graduated in 1954.

Carol was employed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she worked as a secretary in the Building Department. When her father’s employment transferred the family to southern California in 1958, Carol and her sister Mary Jean remained in Salt Lake City to continue working. A year later, they joined their family in South Gate, California where Carol worked as a secretary for Mayfair Markets.

Carol served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oslo, Norway, from 1962 to 1964, serving 20 of the 24 months as the mission president’s secretary in their mission home. After returning home from Norway, she met her future husband, James Thorpe Chase. As a counselor in the stake mission presidency, he invited her to speak at a Stake Missionary monthly meeting. She was added to those he courted and they were married on May 7, 1966, in the Los Angeles Temple. They purchased a home in Torrance, California, and have lived there ever since.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Carol served in many callings in Relief Society, Primary, Young Women, and served as ward organist for most of her life. She also served for several years at the Los Angeles Temple as an ordinance worker. Carol was firm in her testimony of Jesus Christ and love for her family. She devoted her energy and love on raising five children and enjoyed spending time with her five sisters.

Carol is survived by her husband and four children: Holly Chase of Torrance, Heather Young (Layne) of Utah, daughter-in-law Heather Rose Chase of Hong Kong, Mitchell Chase (Jamie) of Lawndale, and Heidi Hunt (Clay) of Virginia; seven grandchildren: Tanner Young (Kelly), Braxton Young (Maddie), Camryn Holt (Spencer), Nathan Chase, Benjamin Chase, Emma Giles (Noah), and Rebekah Hunt; one great-granddaughter, McKinley Young; and four sisters: Louanne Livesey, Elaine Carruth, Janet Nelson, and Doris Housel.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sister Mary Jean Carruth, and her son, Michael Carruth Chase, who passed away on December 7, 2025.

Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Kent Avenue in Torrance on Saturday, January 24, at 10:00 am. A viewing will be held at 9:00 am. Internment will follow the services at Green Hills Mortuary and Cemetery in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.
