Obituary

Carol Carruth Chase of Torrance, California, passed away on Thursday, December 25, 2025, just 11 days short of her 90th birthday, at home in Torrance, California. She had been under treatment for kidney failure and chronic destructive pulmonary disease.

Carol was born on January 5, 1936, in Ogden, Utah, the oldest of six daughters born to Blaine William Carruth and Marcella May Ford. She attended Lorin Farr Elementary School, Central Junior High School, and Ogden High School. She moved with her family to Salt Lake City in 1953 and attended South High School for her senior year, graduating in 1954.

Carol was employed by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she worked as a secretary in the Building Department. Her father’s employment transferred the family to Southern California in 1958, but Carol and her sister, Mary Jean, remained working in Salt Lake City. A year later, they joined their family in South Gate, California. There she worked as a secretary for Mayfair Markets. Carol served a full-time mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Oslo, Norway, from 1962 to 196,4 where she served for 20 of the 24 months as the Norway mission president’s secretary in their mission home. After returning home from Norway, she met her future husband, James Thorpe Chase. He, as a counselor in the stake mission presidency, invited her to speak at their next Stake Missionary monthly meeting. She was added to those he courted, and they were married on May 7, 1966, in the Los Angeles Temple. They bought a house in Torrance, California, and have lived there ever since.

A lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Carol served in many callings in Relief Society, Primary, Young Women, and served as ward organist for most of her life. She also served for several years at the Los Angeles Temple as an ordinance worker. Carol was firm in her testimony of Jesus Christ and love for her family. She focused her energy and love on raising five children and enjoyed spending time with her five sisters.

She is survived by her husband and four children: Holly Chase of Torrance, Heather Young (Layne) of Utah, Mitchell Chase (Jamie) of Lawndale, and Heidi Hunt (Clay) of Virginia; daughter-in-law Heather Rose Chase of Hong Kong; seven grandchildren: Tanner & Kelly Young, Braxton & Maddie Young, Camryn & Spencer Holt, Nathan Chase, Benjamin Chase, Emma & Noah Giles, and Rebekah Hunt; one great-granddaughter, McKinley Young; and four sisters: Louanne Livesey, Elaine Carruth, Janet Nelson, and Doris Housel. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister, Mary Jean Carruth, and her son, Michael Carruth Chase, who passed away very recently.

Funeral services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Torrance on Saturday, January 24, at 10:00 am. A viewing will be held at 9:00 am.
