Carmen Mae Martin McGee, 92, passed away on August 22, 2023. She was born in Long Beach, California, the daughter of Chester and Imogene Wood Martin. She was united in marriage to John McGee on February 3, 1957 in Redondo Beach, California, and they had one son, Martin. She graduated from Banning High School in 1949 and attended Harbor Junior College. She graduated with a B.A. in Elementary School Education from USC in 1954 where she was a member of the Kappa Delta Sorority.
She taught in the Torrance and Palos Verdes schools for 20 years while taking a few years off when her son was born. She went back to part time teaching in 1981 working with the academically talented students in various Torrance elementary and middle schools. In 1984, she took on a full time teaching assignment at Victor Elementary School. After retiring in 1987, she did some part time work substitute teaching and working along with her husband for a school picture photography company and proctoring state exams.
She enjoyed sewing, machine embroidery, quilting, traveling, camping and cruising and did a great deal of all those things over the years.
She was a lifetime member of the Order of Eastern Star and she was Worthy Matron in 1971. She also spent many years as a member and officer of the Las Hermanas service organization at the YMCA where she was instrumental in creating new programs.
She is survived by her husband, son, son-in-law and several loving nieces and nephews. Visitation and services will be held on September 14 and 15. For more details, please email carmenmcgeememorial@gmail.com.
